Gauss’ idea is basically: Can we work out charge inside a jar by looking at the field going in or coming out. The challenge is: two signs, so field direction counts.

 

 

Relates the electric field flux  through a closed Gaussian surface to the charge enclosed inside the surface

 

 

 

 

  • All net charge is on the surface of a conductor (net charge inside is zero)

 

 

Field lines are parallel to the surface
