Consider two conductive plates separated by a distance.

As electrons transfer from one plate to the other, the electric field is built up, and it becomes progressively harder and harder to transfer subsequent electrons.

 

When a capacitor is charged, its two plates have equal and opposite charges  and

 

 

Unit is Farads (F)
