Thermal Contact

  • If energy can be exchanged in form of heat or electromagnetic radiation
  • Energy is exchanged as a result of temperature differences
  • Thermal contact does not require physical contact

Thermal Equilibrium

No energy will be exchanged if objects are placed in thermal contact.

Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics

If objects A and B are in thermal equilibrium

And if objects B and C are in thermal equilibrium

Then objects A and C are in thermal equilibrium

SI Unit of Temperature

What allows heat to flow?

Thermal Contact

Two objects are in thermal contact with each other if energy can be exchanged between them in the form of heat or electromagnetic radiation.

Energy is exchanged due to a temperature difference.

This does not necessarily mean physical contact!

When does heat flow stop?

Thermal Equilibrium

Thermal equilibrium occurs when two objects will not exchange any net energy if placed in thermal contact
