Confidence intervals for the mean: summary
The several situations leading to different confidence intervals for the
mean can be summarised as follows:
The first question is: Is the population normal? (check from a
histogram and a quantile plot, for instance)
o if yes, is a known ?
if yes, use an exact z-confidence interval:
if no, use an exact t-confidence interval:
o if no, use an approximate large sample confidence interval:
R — Zl_u + Zl_Q/2VF
(provided the sample size is large, say n 2 40)
What if the sample size is small and the population is not normal ?
—+ check on a case by case basis (beyond the scope of this course)
