The Leopold Matrix is a tool we can use to assess a development's environmental impact.

In this matrix, actions of the development are compared against the environmental factors that arise.

On the top, the actions are written

On the left, the environmental factors are written

The magnitude and importance of an action in regards to an environmental impact are both given a score from 1-10, where 1 has the least impact, and 10 has the greatest impact

The typical number of interactions is between 25 and 50.

Disadvantages of the Leopold Matrix
• subjectivity
(no independent/objective assessment scale)
• changes over time not considered
• some double counting may occur
• discrete 2-way interactions only
> more complex interactions and feedback ignored
• no cumulative impacts considered
