Voltage is a
differential quantity, meaning that a voltage in reference between two
points.
We need a reference node, usually at zero volts.
Any node in a circuit can be defined as zero volts.
The zero volt symbol is referred to as the circuit ground.

Earth
An earthed ground is literally a connection to the earth, which provides an important role in electrical safety.
